Essentially, the Mini Countryman S shares its setup with the BMW X1 xDrive28i and the Countryman JCW is closely related to the X1 M35i. They share the same engines and transmissions, and both come standard with all-wheel drive. Thus, it is no surprise that they accelerate just as quickly as one another. BMW definitely underreports acceleration times, though, and both models are known to cut a half a second off their claimed times.
The only real, noticeable difference between the Mini and the X1 in terms of driving dynamics is that the X1 gets standard paddle shifters, where you need to opt for the JCW to get them in the Countryman. We’d stick with the base setup, as it balances performance and comfort almost perfectly for a subcompact SUV. Despite the name of the automaker that builds it, the Countryman is anything but mini.
