Tabs, toolbars, and address bars are essential for browser navigation, but when you’re deep into reading an article or watching a video, they’re just clutter that takes away the immersive viewing experience. Instead of adding AI features like its rivals, Vivaldi 7.9 is doubling down on interface control and distraction-free browsing with its latest update.
Fixes for screen space and tab chaos
A standout feature of Vivaldi 7.9 is the new UI Auto-hide, which hides all browser UI elements so that the webpage takes center stage. These essential tools can reappear instantly when you move the cursor to any edge of the screen. Unlike traditional full-screen modes that completely take over your display, Vivaldi’s approach offers flexibility. It lets you customize exactly which parts of the interface disappear and which remain visible.
Hit CTRL+F11 on Windows or Command + F10 on Mac and everything vanishes. Move your mouse to the edge, and it all comes back. It’s that simple.
The latest update also introduces the Follower Tab. You might know the frustration of opening an embedded link in a webpage if there are already too many tabs open. You click on one link, get distracted, click another link, and before you know it, you can’t remember which one had the original article. This feature makes things easier. Right-clicking any link gives the option of ‘Open link as a Tiled Follower Tab’. Any additional links you click this way will open the page in the same tab. The main page stays locked in, acting as an anchor while you explore related content side-by-side.
The feature is designed to make research and deep browsing sessions more seamless without constant manual organization. The Follower Tab can be triggered via mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts, so you don’t have to rely on right-click menus every time.
Beyond browsing, Vivaldi’s built-in email client can now open the mail composer in its own separate window. That’s quite helpful if you’re drafting emails while referencing other tabs. The composer can also be moved to a second monitor or switch to full-screen for longer drafts. You can switch between rich and plain text with a single toggle. There are also minor changes, such as performance improvements with reduced memory usage on larger inboxes, improved mail list handling, and saving selected messages directly to disk for offline storage and archiving.
Those using Vivaldi can update to the latest version 7.9 by heading to Help > Check for updates. You can also download it from Vivaldi’s official website for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Vivaldi has built its reputation on offering serious customizations without requiring extensions. This update pushes the philosophy further as it’s not to compete on AI features or flashy assistants.
