The Power of Community – Our impact in 2025/26

We’re delighted to share our latest Impact Report, the Power of Community. During 2025 and into 2026, our teams, alongside our partners and volunteers, continued to work with some of the most complex and vulnerable people in our communities – such as those experiencing mental health challenges and homelessness

When Second Step was founded over nearly 40 years ago, our mission was based on the understanding that when people are given the right support in their communities, they are empowered to thrive and are much less likely to return to hospital or become homeless.

Today, we’re more confident in our mission than ever before. We work in our communities creating strong spaces to build connection, trust and belonging. The people we work with know where to turn when things get tough.

That’s why we chose the Power of Community as our theme for our 2025/26 impact report. Through inspiring stories and key statistics, we demonstrate seven ways we can build stronger communities:

  1. Foster belonging
  2. Break down barriers
  3. Create hope and courage
  4. Deliver integrated support
  5. Build partnerships
  6. Learn and innovate together
  7. Looking ahead

Our Chief Executive Aileen Edwards says:

“This year’s report highlights the extraordinary impact our teams and partners have made over the last 12 months. Time and time again we see people thrive when they feel connected, supported, and able to access the right help at the right time.

We share the stories of people like Whitney, who found belonging and stability through Wellbridge House, and Sarah, whose journey through Changing Futures shows what can be achieved when support is truly strengths-based, trauma-informed, and led by the person themselves. Do take a look!”

Strike action is planned for 3 and 4 March, and 7-17 March 2026. Discussions with UNISON are ongoing.

We have made a clear and constructive offer to establish a union recognition agreement, following the standard process led by Acas. As part of our offer, a final agreement on recognition would be subject to a whole-staff ballot. This is to ensure all staff have a say in this important decision.

Regarding pay, we cannot offer any uplift for the financial year 2025/2026 as this would put our service delivery at unacceptable risk and is not sustainable. We have made our tight financial situation clear to UNISON at every stage of our negotiations.

Our clients’ wellbeing continues to be our priority

While we respect the right of union members to take lawful industrial action, our focus remains on maintaining safe, continuous support for the people who rely on our services every day.

We are working with our teams to put our updated business continuity plans into action. Team managers and senior leaders are supporting colleagues, and despite strike action, services are continuing with minimal disruption.

We remain committed to resolving this dispute and we are working with UNISON, via Acas, to see if we can resolve our differences.

This is not without its challenges, particularly at this time of year, and we are grateful to our hundreds of colleagues and clients for their understanding and support.
