The Mercedes-AMG GT line has been defined by monstrous gas engines, but that ends today. The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has become an EV, and it’s using next-gen motor and battery technology to rival the performance of Tesla’s Model S Plaid and other top-tier electric sports cars.
The redesigned model is built around three “axial flux” motors (one front, two rear) where the electromagnetic flux parallels the motor’s rotation axis, rather than running perpendicular. That optimizes the resulting magnetic flux and helps it deliver up to 1,166 horsepower.
A 106-kWh Formula 1-derived 800-volt battery has directly-cooled cylindrical cells that not only feed power to those motors, but can do it “repeatedly and continuously,” according to Mercedes.

Multi-link front and rear suspension systems
The net effect is a car that in GT 63 trim can not only manage a 0-62 MPH time of 2.1 seconds and (with a Drivers Package) 186 mph top speed, but do so more consistently.
You can blast down a track without overheating the battery and losing performance, Mercedes claims. That puts it on par with the Model S Plaid’s acceleration and slightly in front of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT (2.2 seconds), but theoretically keeps it ahead when you’re racing, not just in a drag race.
Mercedes-AMG hasn’t detailed the GT 4-Door’s maximum range so far. However, its 600-kW peak charging power lets it add 286 miles of WLTP-estimated range in 10 minutes, and jump from a 10% charge to 80% in 11 minutes. Handling, at least, isn’t under dispute: the automaker touts multi-link front and rear suspension systems (active at the back) that, combined with updated aerodynamics, promise fast cornering, stability, and predictable behavior.

V8 nostalgia meets EV tech
You can mimic a gas engine’s sound
Mercedes-AMG is well aware that some buyers will miss the inline-six and twin-turbo V8 engines from the outgoing GT 4-Door Coupe, and in some ways has built the 2027 model’s nterior around that longing.
Invoke an AMGFORCE S+ mode and you’ll get not just the “signature” V8 sound, but haptic feedback through the steering wheel that mimics the traction break you feel during (simulated) gear changes. You’ll even hear a rumble as you approach the car. Effectively, you can fully transition from gas to electric when you’re ready.
The cabin is driver-oriented with a 14-inch infotainment display tilted toward the driver (there’s also a 14-inch passenger display) and, crucially, a Race Engineer control system with three physical knobs to quickly tweak accelerator response, cornering behavior, and traction control levels. You can dial in your preferred balance between comfort and raw performance, not just rely on preset modes.
As this is a sedan, Mercedes-AMG has made some concessions to luxury. The rear has an optional three-seat bench when the two contoured seats aren’t enough, and you can expect both a panoramic glass roof (complete with star effects at night) and plenty of ambient lighting.
The GT 4-Door uses the same MB.OS platform as other 2027 Mercedes cars, including the more natural MBUX voice assistant that can draw on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Bing. AMG’s influence is still visible here, though, including a motor-oriented display style and a dedicated menu for real-time performance data.
If you race, a Track Pace feature helps you improve lap times by comparing your drive against the track you’re on, including legends like the Nürburgring.

Expect an expensive thrill ride
Mercedes-AMG expects to deliver a base GT 55 4-Door (with a 0-62 mph time of “just” 2.5 seconds) later this year, with the top-spec GT 63 arriving in 2027.
Prices aren’t available as of this writing. However, the 2026 AMG GT 63 S E-Performance 4-Door plug-in hybrid starts at $200,500. We’d expect a full EV to cost more, especially when the comparable Taycan Turbo GT begins at $243,700.
A Model S Plaid successor if you missed out
The electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is likely to cost much more than a Model S Plaid, even compared to the Signature Series, but it has a key advantage: it’s in production.
Tesla discontinued the Model S as part of its pivot toward AI and robotics, so you’re unlikely to get a Plaid unless you find a used model. In that light, the GT is a viable replacement for Tesla’s former flagship if you want the performance and have the budget.
