A new rumor suggests that the iPhone Air 2 is being tested and is expected to launch in early 2027 with improved battery life and an ultra-wide camera. Though, these aren’t groundbreaking claims.
The iPhone Air debuted in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 lineup as a separate device. It seemed clear at the time that Apple wouldn’t be upgrading it annually, at least not at first.
The latest rumor places the second-generation iPhone Air in the spring alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. Speculation already picked that timeframe due to the previously known shift in iPhone release schedule.
According to the rumor from Bloomberg, the iPhone Air 2 will focus on battery life improvements and adding a second camera. Both are chief complaints of iPhone Air buyers that Apple clearly needs to address.
The report further colors itself more as guesswork than rumor with the asterisk midway down that “the product’s timeline and specifications could ultimately change.” That kind of rear-end covering doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence here.
We’ve seen similar language in other rumors, like with the iPhone Fold successor rumored for the fall of 2027.
However, whether this is a well sourced rumor and iPhone Air 2 is just covering the obvious bases, an obvious guess, or a troll on Reddit pretending to be an anonymous Apple source — it’s clear these are goals for iPhone Air 2. Before we get to that, we’ve got to see how Apple’s September launch of iPhone 18 Pro goes first.
Repeated iPhone Air 2 rumors
The iPhone Air represents a fork in Apple’s iPhone product line. Customers can choose the base model, the high-priced feature-filled iPhone Pro, or the ultra-thin iPhone Air.
Given the compromises in the iPhone Air, it seems the long-rumored iPhone Fold will be set at a tier above the iPhone Air. It won’t have the camera system of the iPhone Pro and will have a less durable design.
Given this clear distinction in lineup priorities, it seems obvious that Apple would have an Air in the spring and a foldable in the fall. Just as iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro are split that way based on feature set and price, so will these.
One source tried to suggest iPhone Air was pushed to 2027 due to poor iPhone Air sales. That was never the case, as the naming suggests it was never meant to launch in step with the mainline iPhones.
However, it isn’t clear if Apple will release iPhone Air each year in the spring. Bloomberg seems to think Apple will have an iPhone Fold 2 ready in late 2027 as well.
So, Apple will release six iPhone models in a single calendar year, every year. Now, that’s ambitious.
iPhone Fold limbo
We already heard Digital Chat Station claim that the iPhone Air 2 would have two rear cameras, though they mistakenly claimed it could come in 2026 at the time. They repeated that claim multiple times before shifting over to claiming the iPhone Fold would launch on time in fall 2026.
Instant Digital and Nikkei Asia have both claimed that the iPhone Fold has faced production issues that could lead to delays. The rumor mill has been decidedly split in these assertions, with some claiming Apple will announce the foldable anyway, even if they ship later.
The reason I bring up iPhone Fold’s potential delays is because of how it could affect Apple’s release strategy across several months. If iPhone Fold can’t get production ramped up until early 2027, it seems odd to assert that iPhone Fold 2 would arrive later in the same year.
And if iPhone Fold is a high-end version of iPhone Air, I wonder how late releases in one model might affect demand for the other. Apple could push these models in any direction to make room for the other.
We’re seeing clear evidence that Apple is working up to a release of the iPhone Fold, but I wonder if supply chain and testing issues won’t punt it back a year. Perhaps Bloomberg‘s rumor about the 2027 iPhone Fold is in fact the first model, delayed by a year.
2027 iPhone releases still an unknown
At some point, a call has to be made. And it is the middle of June and supply chains haven’t made any indication that iPhone Fold mass production has begun.
The 2027 cycle still isn’t set in stone given that we’re still waiting on iPhone 18 Pro in September
I’m still skeptical it’s coming in 2026 at all. And if it is delayed a year, I wonder if the entire project isn’t killed before it goes any further.
We are talking about a niche of a niche product with a high price and potentially easy to break. Those factors, plus the emergence of spatial computing, make me wonder if foldables are worth pursuing at all at this point.
Sure, in 2019 they sounded like the perfect way to get a bigger form factor out of a pocketable device. Now, we have headsets and glasses capable of providing near-infinite portable displays.
Regardless, the iPhone Air in early 2027 makes a lot of sense. And, if Apple is addressing battery life and camera concerns, I expect it’ll be a big seller too.
I expect between the iPhone Fold and iPhone Air 2, the latter will hold strong to that spring release window. That’s 18 months from the first version and a good spot to release a premium-priced smartphone.
