Yes, those more expensive options might feel a lot more refined and easier to live with on the day-to-day, but if pure driving verve is your goal, the Elantra N actually feels like the better call.

The Elantra N comes as a fully-loaded model, meaning there isn’t any toiling over which trim offers the best value for money. The biggest choices you have to make are what color you want it painted and which transmission you want. There is a limited-run track-focused model on its way to market called the TCR, though. Under the hood of every Elantra N sits an overachieving turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It puts down 276 horsepower, which it sends exclusively to the front wheels. As mentioned earlier, you get a choice of transmissions here. A six-speed manual is the standard choice, with a very impressive 8-speed wet DCT offered as a $1,500 optional extra. Auto models can also temporarily boost output up to 286 horses through a button on the steering wheel.

People immediately dog on this car for being front-wheel drive, but we know most of those people haven’t sat behind the wheel of an Elantra N. Yes, you have to drive around the limitations of the format, but just about everything else makes up for it. Its steering is fantastic, and loads up really nicely under cornering. The feedback through the steering wheel is also near unrivaled at this price point. Front-end grip is fantastic, and it always feels eager to be pushed harder. We’d also be remiss to not mention the satisfying burbles and pops you get, especially in N mode.

The Elantra N speaks for itself on the track. The TCR version. Over the last couple of years, the TCR version has secured a number of Touring Car Racing wins. A lot of testers have also found it gets around a track faster than more expensive rivals, like the GR Corolla. last year, in Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap, the Elantra N got around their track a second quicker than the AWD GR Corolla, despite costing thousands of dollars less.

Engaging performance without the sacrifice

Something that a lot of automakers get wrong when making thrilling versions of their cars is that the price and the interior are often mismatched. The Civic Type R is a fantastic performance car for its price, but its interior doesn’t feel like the interior of a $50,000 car. The Elantra N’s cabin isn’t particularly plush, but it is more than acceptable for a car that costs $35,000.

Interior dimensions and comfort

Being a sedan, the Elantra N does not have the same amount of cargo space that the hot hatches in this segment offer. The GR Corolla, for instance, offers 18 cubes. However, it is especially generous when it comes to passenger space. Even particularly tall people will find the back seat plenty spacious for longer journeys, with a good amount of headroom and legroom on offer. Toyota’s spicy hatchback has less than 30 inches of legroom in the back.

You’re not going to be blown away by the interior of the Elantra N, but you’re not going to be disappointed either. As we already touched on, it feels exactly as good as you’d expect a $35,000 car to feel on the inside. The N model comes with some nice touches over the classic Elantra, including a smattering of alcantra, aggressively bolstered sports seats, metal pedals, and a much sportier steering wheel.

Infotainment and technology

The Elantra N also feels a little more modern than some of its rivals in the tech department. You get a dual-screen setup, with two 10.3-inch screens sharing a single bezel on top of the dashboard. One acts as the gauge display with the other housing the infotainment system.
