Good Lock is why I keep coming back to the Galaxy S26


In my Galaxy S26 review, I briefly mentioned that Good Lock is a pilgrimage every Samsung user should undertake. One UI is jam-packed with features, which don’t always feel coherent, but the software design seems deliberate. Samsung’s custom skin has been among my favorites due to its strong identity, and one of its best hidden tricks is Good Lock.

Good Lock is one of those Samsung features that can be weirdly easy to ignore. There’s no shiny demo at the start of the setup process, sitting as a separate app that you’ll have to download. But oddly enough, it is exactly what gives One UI the edge over many other Android skins.

Samsung describes Good Lock as a suite of customization apps for Galaxy devices, letting users personalize the interface, improve productivity, and install only the tools they actually need. This doesn’t sound too interesting till you actually give it a shot.

Good Lock makes your phone feel distinct

The module that instantly explains the appeal is Theme Park. I used it to push my Galaxy S26 into deep purple tones across the interface, including the Quick Settings panel. This isn’t your typical wallpaper-matching trick, as you can get in-depth options. With QuickStar, you can redesign parts of the Quick Panel, while LockStar makes the lock screen and Always On Display become more flexible. I even added stickers to the AOD, including goody little line faces, because why not?

It is absolutely not for everyone. But the fact that Samsung even let me make these changes is the point.

Most phones let you choose a wallpaper, pick a color palette, and maybe change icons if the launcher supports it. Good Lock goes several layers deeper. It makes the Galaxy S26 feel less like Samsung’s phone and more like mine.

There’s a lot of silly stuff

The most fun I had was with Edge Lighting+. I set up a flower effect that pops up when a notification comes in. Again, this isn’t essential at all and frankly kind of ridiculous. It makes notifications even more distracting, yet my phone felt more alive in some weird manner. You do have more practical lighting effects to choose from, and they won’t make your phone feel spring. But it is really fun to mess around with.

Chinese smartphones are known for going all-in on customizations, and it’s great to see that Samsung doesn’t fall behind either. The Galaxy S26 hardware does appear safe in places. Good Lock helps push back against that by having the software be more unique.

Utility is solid too

Good Lock is not only about making your phone look different. You get access to plenty of modules that are quietly useful. I already called NotiStar my favorite in the Galaxy S26 review, and I still think it is one of the best Good Lock tools because notification management is one of those things Android can never make too good. Sound Assistant is a close second for me because it gives you more granular control over audio behavior than the regular settings menu.

Then there is Nice Catch, which helps track unexplained actions like vibrations, sounds, ringer mode changes, call mode changes, and toast notifications. If you’ve ever been bothered or curious about why your phone is buzzing for no apparent reason, this makes sure no software gets away with it.

Camera Assistant is another module worth calling out. Samsung’s own Good Lock listing includes camera customization among its plugin tools, and the module adds the sort of camera behavior tweaks that power users usually wish were built directly into the default camera app.

The beauty of Good Lock is that you do not need to use all of this. Samsung has built a modular app that lets you choose how deep you want to go. So you can simply skip any of the ones that don’t interest you.

Samsung can brag about this more

Good Lock isn’t entirely unknown. At this point, it’s more of an open secret. However, it can be a bit confusing for those getting into it for the first time. A casual user could open it, stare at the list, and leave immediately. But if you give it a shot, you’ll see why the flexibility in Android is the reason why many people never move over to Apple’s polished but locked ecosystem. After using it properly on the Galaxy S26, going back to a cleaner Android phone seems strangely limiting.

If you’re looking for a family SUV that is spacious, light on gas, and will last you a long time with few issues, then the Grand Highlander Hybrid feels like a no-brainer. It is slightly pricier than some of its direct rivals, but Toyota’s experience in developing hybrid means that you can rest peacefully knowing that this three-row SUV should last you years without any problem.

Compared to other hybrid three-row SUVs, the Grand Highlander is priced pretty well. While there are some more affordable options, like the Hyundai Palisade and Santa Fe, it undercuts rivals like the Kia Telluride and the Mazda CX-90. This middle of the pack pricing is about on-par for Toyota.

Of the above trims, we think that opting for the XLE gets you the best bang for your buck. It comes with all the features you’d want in a family hauler, such as a power-operated liftgate, a spattering of USB-C ports throughout the cabin, heated front seats, faux-leather upholstery, and a very comprehensive suite of driver aids.

While the Grand Highlander is technically a newer model, it is essentially just a long wheelbase version of the regular Highlander, meaning its mechanical components have proven themselves to be dependable.

Your first two years or scheduled maintenance visits are free with your purchase of a Grand Highlander. After that point, maintenance is reasonably affordable. CarEdge estimates that the average SUV would cost you $1,867 more to maintain over ten years than the Grand Highlander.

While the cabins of Toyota’s vehicles are usually a little pedestrian, there is something to be said about how versatile they are, as well as how easy they are to live with. The Grand Highlander definitely follows this trend. The ‘Grand’ in Grand Highlander refers to the fact that it is quite a bit bigger than the traditional Highlander, with much more room on the inside. While the third row is still best suited for the kids, you could definitely fit a pair of adults back there at a push. We’re also really impressed with how much cargo space there is behind the third row.

The cabin layout of the Grand Highlander is very neat. Everything is easy to find and there are a ton of storage compartments scattered throughout. Its design won’t blow you away, but you’ll be pleased with just how intuitive all the controls are. The most affordable trims focus on the essentials, but top trims can come with some pretty plush features, including genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and captain’s chairs in the second row.

Infotainment and technology

Every Grand Highlander comes equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen mounted to the top of the dashboard. Lower trim levels come with a hybrid gauge cluster that includes a seven-inch display in the middle, but from the Limited up you get a fully digital 12.3-inch unit instead.

As we already mentioned, there are a number of USB-C ports throughout the cabin, so that the whole family can charge their devices. A wireless charging pad is also included. Three-zone automatic climate control and wireless smartphone mirroring are standard on every trim level. Top trims also offer some better tech, including a heads-up display and an 11-speaker JBL sound system.

Hauling the family doesn’t have to mean spending a ton on gas

Toyota’s ideology of function over form definitely translates into how they tune the performance of their cars. The Grand Highlander Hybrid may not be the most interesting SUV from behind the wheel, but its fuel-sipping powertrain and plush ride means that it will save you money in the long run and keep the family happy.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid comes in two different forms. Most models feature a naturally aspirated inline-four under the hood. The Platinum comes exclusively with the Hybrid MAX setup, though, with the Limited offering a choice of either. The standard hybrid powertrain better suits the Grand Highlander in our mind, with the Hybrid MAX’s quick acceleration clashing with the SUV’s laid-back personality, especially because it takes it toll when it comes to efficiency.

As is the case with a lot of Toyota’s mainstream models, the Grand Highlander lacks excitement, even accounting for the Hybrid MAX’s quick acceleration. Steering is exceptionally light and vague, and the suspension is clearly set up for comfort. This isn’t a bad thing in our eyes, though, as the mission of the Japanese SUV is to get your family from A to B. This is where its comfortable ride quality really shines through.

Toyota skips the flash and the gimmicks that a lot of other brands have leaned into in the last couple of years. They focus instead on proven technology and long-term dependability. If you’re buying a family vehicle, that should be high up on your list of priorities. Any parent will tell you that they’d take simple functionality over anything, which is what makes the Grand Highlander Hybrid such a solid choice in this segment.
