Ditching Windows is the loudest feedback you can ever give Microsoft


Are you fed up with Microsoft’s invasive behavior? They’re increasingly inserting themselves into your digital life, collecting your data and outright disrespecting your wishes. It would normally anger me, but there’s no Microsoft on my system, and I’ll explain why.

From collecting data to manipulating its users, Microsoft has become a villain in several key ways, laying the groundwork for its potential downfall. How Microsoft treats its users is not okay. They’re complacent and, if not careful, will do irreversible damage to their brand. Linux is waiting, and it naturally positions itself on Microsoft’s weaknesses: cost and freedom.

Something changed at Microsoft sometime after Windows 7. I don’t know if they envied Google’s lucrative data collection model on their highly popular operating system (Android), but they went from collecting almost no user data on Windows XP to harvesting an absurd amount today.

You only need to take a look at their documentation to recognize the jaw-dropping scope of this operation. It would be quicker to list the things they don’t collect:

  • The color of your underpants
  • Your dog’s name
  • What you had for breakfast

Microsoft receives potentially thousands of data points about your system, and collection occurs every time you change something or reboot. In addition to that, Windows 11 attaches common data to every request, such as:

  • Device IDs, makes, and models
  • User IDs, both local and cloud
  • OS information
  • App information (like session data) to determine usage behavior
  • Much more

For the sake of brevity, I’m only scratching the surface, and I suggest you see for yourself. The page is technical, but the tiny scroll handle clearly indicates its immense scale. This is not a small document.

For people moving to Linux, data collection is one of the often-cited reasons. Users want privacy. They’re not subjects; they’re human beings. It’s not right, and declining to purchase Microsoft products is how you speak their language.

Linux is free and doesn’t collect your data without asking. When they do ask, on the rare occasion, a simple “no” is all it takes—no games or switching settings without your consent. Your Linux system stays private forever.

Is it any wonder that Microsoft puts itself first? They’re a multinational corporation whose primary goal is to make as much money as they can. Given the historical monopoly they’ve had over the desktop market, it’s hardly surprising they take their users for granted.

In recent years, Microsoft has frequently employed deceptive design patterns (aka dark patterns) to coerce and manipulate its users into specific actions. While these tactics are common in marketing, they exploit biases in human thinking to elicit desired outcomes.

Let’s quickly touch on the relevant dark patterns:

  • Nagging: Persistent requests that exhaust users into submission. For example, constant notifications to subscribe to a newsletter.
  • Sneaking into basket: Adding an item to a list or checkout basket without permission. For example, when you check out and find an extra promotional product there.
  • Misdirection: The use of deceptive visuals or language. For example, making a close button function as an accept button.
  • Obstruction: When an undesirable action is more difficult than a desirable one. For example, making the deactivation of an account incredibly difficult.
  • Forced action: When a desirable action is unavoidable. For example, a dialog box that won’t close until you provide an email address.

Using these patterns is not a mistake. It requires a premeditated commitment to mislead people, and over the last decade, Microsoft has deployed a suite of dirty tricks to make its users comply:

  • Nagging: They persistently sent notifications asking the user to upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Sneaking into basket: They included Windows 10 upgrades as part of security patches and also set Edge as the default browser.
  • Misdirection: They modified a confirmation dialog box so that the “X” button acted as a sign of acceptance to upgrade.
  • Obstruction: When users set telemetry collection to minimal amounts, Windows Update failed to work correctly, additionally putting users at risk.
  • Forced action: Resetting users’ advertising preferences after an upgrade and ignoring the default browser option for Start Menu searches.

Using such tactics is a dead end. It will only infuriate users, break their trust, and lead them to places they don’t want to go. You don’t get any of this on Linux. You get a stable interface designed and written by the very people who use it. There is no ulterior motive to upsell or lock you in—you’re free to leave and come back as you please. With Linux, you get what you ask for, and your choices are respected.

Paying for software usually means you get the premium package and first-class treatment. That’s not the case with Microsoft.

Windows 11 saw the arrival of Start Menu ads, with lock-screen suggestions, promotional notifications, and recommended content cropping up even earlier. They take license fees, restrict your usage, and farm your time and attention.

It’s time to push back, and you do that by moving platforms. Hit them where it hurts: their pockets.

Linux doesn’t show you ads. Enough said.


Vote with your dollars, because that’s the only feedback Microsoft understands

You may have noticed I never mentioned the invasive AI tech or the buggy software, because I didn’t feel the need. These are major issues, each enough to force change by itself.

The insufferable problems with Windows keep piling up, and with their minds on their bottom line, Microsoft shows no signs of caring what you think. They’ll capitalize on you as many times as they can.

So what can you do? I think the answer is obvious: You vote with your dollars. It’s not a personal crusade, just a sensible signal to Microsoft that these violations are not okay. Until they’re willing to respect you as a paying customer who pays for the privilege of ownership—not for the privilege of being dictated to—Linux is waiting there, and they won’t charge you a single cent.

On paper, my routine wasn’t complicated. But in practice, it meant jumping between apps throughout the day. Sleep, workouts, food, spending, and work all lived in different places, and while each one worked fine in isolation, none of them shared context. A bad night of sleep never showed up next to too much screen time, and I never explicitly linked a stretch of low-energy habits to a slow day at my desk.

That separation is what prompted me to try using Excel. I set up a single workbook with five named tabs: Sleep, Habits, Food & Drink, Work, and Spending, plus another Dashboard worksheet that brought all metrics together. Nothing complex—just a shared structure where everything could exist in the same format instead of being scattered across apps.

The structure that made the experiment work

Building a system simple enough to survive a week

Each tab stayed intentionally lightweight so that I would actually keep using it.

Sleep went into a named table (T_Sleep), where I logged bedtime and wake time in hh:mm format. Hours slept were calculated automatically using:

How to Use Excel’s MOD Function to Solve Real-World Problems

MOD is more versatile than you might think.

Instead of overengineering the setup, I recorded screen time manually on a scale from 1 (low) to 3 (high) based on how much time I had spent on my phone before bed. Conditional formatting handled the feedback, with lower sleep values turning red and better nights shifting green.

Habit tracking lived in T_Habits, with one row per habit per day and a simple checkbox for completion. From there, I built T_HabitComp, which counted completed habits per day using:

=COUNTIFS(T_Habits[Day], [@Day], T_Habits[Completed], TRUE)

That fed directly into the dashboard, alongside a split between general habits and movement-focused ones like workouts and walks.

Food and drink sat in T_FoodDrink, structured as three entries per day for meals. Coffee was logged at the top of each day’s entry, and takeouts were flagged with checkboxes. It gave a rough sense of how each day played out, even if I wasn’t labeling it that way while logging it.

Work went into T_Work, where I logged hours worked and a productivity score (out of 10) based entirely on instinct. Some days felt focused, others felt scattered, and I reflected that directly in the score. Conditional formatting helped those differences stand out visually without needing extra analysis.

Spending lived in T_Spending, and I treated it differently from the rest. It was more of a separate contextual layer than part of the same routine loop. Data validation drop-down categories like groceries, takeout, coffee, impulse purchases, subscriptions, and transport helped me see where money was going, and I used a separate PivotTable to break down spending by category.

If you add new rows, remember to right-click the PivotTable and click Refresh to reflect those changes.

One small detail kept the whole system manageable: Excel tables automatically expand as new rows are added. That meant I never had to fix ranges or adjust formulas mid-week—structured references meant that everything scaled as I went.

The dashboard turned separate logs into one picture

Once I started logging data, the dashboard quickly became the only part of the workbook I cared about.

At the top, I created summary cards: Average Sleep, Total Spending, Habit Completion, Average Productivity, Exercise Sessions, and Takeout Orders. Each one pulled directly from the underlying tables and updated automatically as I logged entries.

Below that, Excel charts showed how the week unfolded. Sleep appeared as a line over time; habits, coffee consumption, and screen time moved in columns; and work productivity sat alongside as its own timeline. Finally, I used a PivotChart to visualize spending over the week. Then, I removed the Y-axis from all the charts, as the point here was to emphasize relative movement and patterns, not exact values.

I use these 3 Excel formulas to organize my daily life

I refuse to let anyone tell me that Microsoft Excel is only for accountants.

That’s where the system started to make sense. Sleep, habits, and productivity formed the clearest loop. When I stayed up late scrolling, I could see it the next morning in lower sleep totals, and those days tended to feel less structured overall. When I kept habits consistent—especially workouts and walks—the rest of the day followed a more stable rhythm.

Spending didn’t follow the same pattern as the rest, and I stopped trying to force it into one. Instead, I noticed something else: on less structured days, takeout and impulse purchases showed up more often. Coffee tended to cluster on busier, slightly chaotic workdays, but it didn’t drive anything on its own—it just appeared alongside those stretches.

Individually, none of this was surprising, but seeing it layered together is what made it noticeable.


What I’ll take away from a week in Excel

For that week, everything lived in one workbook instead of separate apps. When I wanted the full picture, glancing at the dashboard made the connections in my routine much easier to notice. It felt like a useful reset—something I’ll probably return to when things feel too scattered.

That said, it didn’t replace the convenience of dedicated apps. Sleep trackers are still better at collecting data automatically, and spending apps still do a better job of capturing transactions without effort. But the experiment did change how I think about tracking in general—not as separate tools, but as one system where everything sits in the same frame.
