The 2026 Oscars have passed, with One Battle After Another walking away with the prestigious Best Picture award. Earlier in the night, Sentimental Value came away with a historic win in the Best International Feature Film category. Because Neon acquired the North American distribution rights to Sentimental Value, it is now streaming on Hulu in the U.S.
Speaking of Hulu, there is a wide range of Oscar-winning movies available to stream today. One of those movies famously lost Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars. Another became the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. Check out all of our selections below.
Avatar
James Cameron transports audiences to Pandora
Some key talking points around Avatar involve time and money. James Cameron had been thinking of Avatar since 1994 but had to sit on the idea to allow the technology to catch up. The film’s heavy usage of motion capture and CGI inflated Avatar’s budget to over $235 million. And you know what? It was worth every penny as Cameron crafted a technical masterpiece.
In Avatar, humanity is attempting to colonize the moon of Pandora and mine the valuable resources below its surface. Former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who lost the use of his legs, joins the Avatar program, where his brain inhabits a Na’vi body. Jake’s job is to infiltrate the Na’vi and convince them to allow the mining to happen. Instead, Jake falls in love with a Na’vi warrior named Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). I urge you not to take Avatar for granted. Avatar remains a visual wonder and thought-provoking story about colonialism and environmentalism.
At the 2010 Oscars, Avatar received nine Oscar nominations and walked away with three wins: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.
Brokeback Mountain
An Oscar controversy still discussed in 2026
Based on a 1997 short story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain follows the lives of Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), two cowboys hired to herd sheep in 1963 Wyoming. While on Brokeback Mountain, Ennis and Jack begin a romantic relationship. Despite marrying other women and starting families, Ennis and Jack sporadically meet over the years as they contemplate their feelings for one another.
Brokeback Mountain’s beautiful love story and sensational performances from Ledger and Gyllenhaal should be the film’s defining legacy. Instead, Lee’s epic Western is remembered for losing Best Picture to Crash at the 2006 Oscars, one of the most polarizing decisions in the Academy’s illustrious history.
Nominated for eight Oscars, Brokeback Mountain won three awards at the 2006 Oscars: Best Director (Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
Sentimental Value
Families are complicated
If “Daddy Issues” were a movie, it would be Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier’s familial drama starring Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning. Following the death of their mother, sisters Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father, Gustav (Skarsgård), who returns to claim the house. Gustav, a director, offers Nora a role in his next film. When Nora says no, he offers the part to an American actress named Rachel Kemp (Fanning).
How Nora and Agnes navigate their complicated relationship with Gustav is at the heart of Sentimental Value. It’s a fascinating look at artistic expression and the thin line many artists face when determining whether to incorporate personal trauma into their work. Trier has a gift for highlighting loneliness and dysfunctional families, as seen in The Worst Person in the World and now Sentimental Value. It also helps to have the right talent bring your script to life. You can’t ask for much more when your four leads all receive Oscar nominations.
Nominated for nine awards at the 2026 Oscars, Sentimental Value won Best International Feature Film, the first Norwegian movie to win in this category.
Black Panther
The MCU takes the Oscars
Black Panther became the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. You might be thinking, “Well, wait a minute. Didn’t The Dark Knight get a nomination?” The answer is no. The Dark Knight was famously snubbed from the Best Picture category, which resulted in the Academy changing the rules to add more nominees.
As for Black Panther, Ryan Coogler’s superhero epic starred the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the new King of Wakanda who also fights as the Black Panther. T’Challa’s reign is interrupted by Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who seeks to arm oppressed communities with Wakanda weapons so they can overthrow their rulers. Black Panther features the action and adventure of a superhero movie. However, Coogler’s decision to take a more grounded approach and focus on human emotion elevated Black Panther to the top of the MCU.
Nominated for seven Oscars, Black Panther won three awards at the 2019 Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.
