3 stunning HBO Max documentaries to watch this weekend (May 8-10)


By the end of the week, I totally get the appeal of just turning your brain off and watching a mindless episode of Too Hot to Handle. But sometimes the most restorative weekends come by adding a bit of real-life perspective to your gray matter, with a good documentary. Luckily, HBO Max has some of the best quality ones around, and I’ve got a few suggestions below.

This weekend, we’re looking at three distinct portraits of the human spirit—an Oscar-nominated, harrowing look inside Alabama’s broken prison system, a swing of the pendulum to the colorful melodies of children’s music, and a tear-jerking tribute to a real super man.

The Alabama Solution (2025)

A 100% fresh exposé from inside the U.S. prison system

In 2019, when director Andrew Jarecki, the guy behind the crazy-ride Robert Durst documentary The Jinx, and filmmaker Charlotte Kaufman visited Alabama’s Easterling Correctional Facility to film a religious meeting, they were approached off-camera by several inmates who told them that dark things were going on inside the prison. The Alabama Solution is the damning culmination of the six-year investigation inside one of the deadliest prison systems in the U.S. that stemmed from that day, and it’s an eye-opener.

The Oscar-nominated, 100% fresh documentary feature is utterly compelling, largely because of the remarkable access and footage the film uses to document the abuse, corruption, and appalling conditions inside—much of it captured by the inmates themselves using contraband cellphones smuggled in. Much of the narrative centers on the suspicious death of inmate Steven Davis, who was beaten to death by guards in 2019. His mother, Sondra Ray, spends much of the film searching for answers and contending with tight-lipped state officials.

Why kids’ music matters more than you think

As a parent of a teenager, I’m finally at the stage where the trauma of Baby Shark, The Wiggles, and Let It Go has been silenced, pushed into the recesses of my psyche never to be reawakened. So, I was a little reluctant to watch Music Box: Happy And You Know It, for fear of a relapse. I’m kidding (sort of). It was fine.

This fun and interesting installment in HBO’s Music Box series actually takes a deep look at children’s music, revealing a multi-billion-dollar industry that, while its artists are often not taken seriously and their music ridiculed, its role as a developmental tool is vastly underestimated. Directed by Penny Lane (Hail Satan?, Listening to Kenny G), Happy And You Know It will be fascinating for parents who’ve been in the trenches with children’s music, as it brings in some of its worst offenders (I’m kidding), such as The Wiggles’ founding member Anthony Field, ’90s alt rocker Chris Ballew, who jumped ship from The Presidents of the United States of America to become Caspar Babypants, and children’s entertainer Johnny Only, who delves into the controversy and lawsuit around Baby Shark.

Told with a mix of fun, vibrant performance footage and interviews, Happy And You Know It is a quirky, heartfelt, and revealing look at the world of kids’ music, the entertainers behind it, and the role it plays in our kids’ development.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (2024)

A tragic and uplifting portrait of the real-life superhero

With apologies to David Corenswet, Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh, and Dean Cain—Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me. Like kryptonite to the Man of Steel, get ready to be reduced to a rubbery, blubbery mess after watching Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a deeply personal and powerful portrait of Reeve’s life before and beyond the iconic role.

This Emmy-nominated 2024 documentary from directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui is the definitive chronicle of the remarkable life of Reeve. The 1-hour, 44-minute doc traces his life, from his years as an aspiring actor at the prestigious Juilliard school and his lifelong friendship with Robin Williams, through his meteoric rise to fame after starring in Richard Donner’s iconic 1978 masterpiece, Superman, and to the 1995 horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down at the age of 42.

The film is built largely around Reeve’s own voice—pulled from audio recordings, journals, and never-before-seen home movies—and features heartfelt interviews with friends Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Daniels, and Whoopi Goldberg. The archival footage with Reeve and Robin Williams will totally wreck you. The documentary’s back half delves deep into Reeve’s second act as devoted husband and father, and relentless advocate for disability rights, spinal cord and stem cell research, and more, under the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation he founded before his death in 2004. It’s a beautiful tribute.


If your weekend watch list needs something a bit more substantial than the usual disposable true-crime binge or reality show, this lineup of documentaries on HBO Max should do the trick. If not, How-To Geek has all kinds of weekly and monthly streaming recommendation lists you can peruse to scratch whatever itch you have.

The first computer my family owned was an 80286 IBM clone, and it had lots of ports, none of which looked the same. There was a big 5-pin DIN for the keyboard, a serial port, a parallel port, a game port for our joystick, and of course, the VGA port for the monitor.

In comparison, a modern computer has much less diversity in the port department. Not only are there fewer types of ports, but the total number may be quite low as well. When we move to modern laptops, it can be much more minimalist. Some laptops have just a single port on the entire machine! Is this a bad thing? As with anything, the extremes are rarely ideal, but I’d say overall, this has been a pretty positive development for PCs.

The port explosion era was never sustainable

It was more like a port infection

You see, the reason we had so many ports for so long is that people kept inventing new interfaces to make up for the shortcomings of existing ones. However, instead of the newer, better interfaces making the old ones obsolete, they just became additive as perfectly summarized in this classic XKCD comic.

In laptops, the need for so many ports reached ridiculous heights. In this video posted by X user PC Philanthropy, you can see his Sager/Clevo D9T absolutely packed with all the trimmings leading to a rather massive laptop.

It is undeniably a cool machine, but obviously goes against the principle of portable computing. Also, every port you install means power and space that could have been taken up by something else. That’s true for laptops and desktops.

USB-C (almost) solved the problem

So close, but not quite there yet

Released to the public in the mid ’90s, USB came to the rescue. The “U” is for “Universal” and for the most part USB has lived up to that promise. Now there was one port that handled data and power. More importantly, USB is fully backwards compatible. So if you plug a USB 1.1 device into a modern USB port, it should work. Whether you can get software drivers for it is another story, but it will talk to the host device.

USB-C has proven to be less universal than I’d like, and the situation is still far better than it used to be. A single USB-C port on one of my laptops can act as a video output for just about anything, even an old VGA monitor.

My smaller laptops don’t need special chargers anymore, and the latest laptops can pull 240W over USB-C, which is enough for all but the beefiest desktop replacement machines. There is no type of peripheral I can think of that doesn’t give you the option to use it over USB.

But the complaints aren’t so much that we only get USB these days, it’s more that we get so little of it.

Minimal I/O enables better hardware design

Harder, better, faster, stronger

When you only put a handful of USB-C ports on a mobile computer, you reap numerous benefits. The low profile of USB-C means the laptop can be thinner, and the frame can be a stronger and more rigid unibody design. Internally, you have room for more battery, larger performance components, or better cooling.

It also means the internals can be simpler, and cheaper to design and fabricate, though whether those savings are passed on to customers is another story altogether.

Wireless and cloud-first workflows reduce physical dependency

I guess they are “air” ports

Perhaps the first sign of major change was when smartphones dropped headphone jacks, but the fact is that wireless technologies are now good enough for most peripheral and data connections. So, there’s no need to connect them directly to a port on a computer. Which, in turn, means that there’s no reason to have as many ports on the computer in the first place.

I can’t remember the last time I used a wired mouse or keyboard, and I only use Ethernet for devices that need extremely high speeds, low latency, or improved reliability. For normal day-to-day use, modern Wi-Fi is just fine. So while your laptop might not have as many wired ports on the outside, those wireless chips on the inside still give it numerous connectivity options for audio, input, and data transfer.

You could even make the same argument about storage to some extent, with many thin and light systems leaning on cloud storage to make up for a lack of ports to connect external storage.

The dongle backlash misses the bigger picture

The last bit of the port protest centers around dongles, but I never understood the complaints. Having one port that can be broken out into whatever ports you need using a little box is amazing. It makes ports optional and gives you the choice. If you never plug your laptop into anything, why deal with all the ports you’ll never use?

Likewise, if you only ever use ports with your laptop when you dock it at a desk, then you can just leave your dongle ready to go on your desk, but throwing a small dongle in your laptop sleeve or bag in case you might need it is a small price to pay for all the benefits of minimal IO.
