Hulu‘s slate of new shows for June has gotten off to a solid start, with Mindy Kaling’s new Workplace/friends dramedy, Not Suitable for Work, making the rounds, and we still have the series finale of The Bear to look forward to closer to the end of the month.
For this weekend, though, if you’re looking to get lost in a binge of something good or spicy, I’ve got a few very different suggestions for you: a chilling return to the Gilead dystopia you thought you’d left behind, the reunion sitcom you didn’t know you needed, and a sun-soaked salacious reality TV dating series in its 13th season.

The Testaments
Gilead’s daughters come of age
Praise be, the world of author Margaret Atwood’s chilling Gilead is back on the small screen to continue scaring the crap out of us with its version of a future that sometimes dances a little too close to reality. Set four years after the events of the finale of Hulu’s blockbuster, 15-time Emmy-winning dystopian thriller, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments (based on Atwood’s sequel novel) takes us inside a different realm of the totalitarian religious dictatorship that took over the United States, an elite academy that trains future wives of Gilead.
The series trains its lens on two key characters, Agnes MacKenzie (One Battle After Another‘s Chase Infiniti), a true believer who grew up inside Gilead, and Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a converted outsider who grew up in Toronto. But while the girls have been brought up in a life of privilege, they’re still being oppressed and taught only to serve their future husbands. That is, until Daisy’s presence leads Agnes to begin questioning her world, threatening to change her life forever.

This Hulu thriller stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as married spies who discover they are both undercover agents working for opposing agencies. What is the show called?
Correct! Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2024, but it’s worth noting Donald Glover’s spy projects have generated significant buzz. However, as a trick — this show actually aired on Prime Video, not Hulu! Always double-check the platform.
Careful — Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine actually streamed on Amazon Prime Video, not Hulu! It’s a common mix-up. Hulu has plenty of great thrillers, but this one belonged to a rival platform when it launched in 2024.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair
Twenty years later, Cranston, Muniz, and crew are still demented
This sequel revival of one of the most beloved sitcoms of the early 2000s has been much-desired by fans for years, and it’s finally come to fruition. I joyfully binged all four half-hour episodes on a flight, and loved every wacky, over-the-top minute of it. Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair catches up with traumatized Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), now in his thirties and a single dad, who’s managed to escape and dodge his dysfunctional family for years. Until now.
The excellent Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprise their roles as smothering parents Hal and Lois, as they prepare to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary—a big event they’re trying to drag Malcolm home for, only they have no idea that Malcolm has a teenage daughter and is in love with a new girlfriend. When the family learns of Malcolm’s secret, all hell breaks loose (including a hysterical, hallucinatory drug trip Hal goes on to cope), and Malcolm is dragged back into the maelstrom of his family.
All the original cast returned for the brilliantly funny reunion, except for Erik Per Sullivan, who played the second-youngest brother, Dewey, who was busy with his studies at Harvard. Life’s Still Unfair was well liked by critics and audiences, garnering an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Love Island UK (Season 13)
Sunshine, singles, scandal, and British accents in Mallorca
It’s confession time: After years of pretending to ignore the TV screen as my wife ripped through season after season of both the US and this, the original UK versions of the absolutely ridiculous Love Island reality dating shows, I can’t lie anymore. I kinda, sorta, maybe enjoy it. Season 13 of Love Island UK began streaming June 4th, and is well underway as its 12 hot and single muscle-bound bros and bombshell babes couple up in a Spanish villa and try not to get dumped—all for the 50,000-pound prize if they make it to the end.
Host Maya Jama returns for her fourth season, and the snarky one-liner comic relief and narration is brought to you by comedian Iain Stirling (who does his thing on the USA version as well). Sparks and spray-tans are already flying in season 13, with a few spicy twists thrown in for good measure, including a pair of brothers duking it out, a professional footballer among the cast, and a West End theatre performer establishing a foothold early on.
Yes, it’s an over-the-top guilty pleasure, and the contestants are often vain and vapid, but that’s all part of the fun. But don’t let the “trash TV” moniker take too strong a foothold on you, Love Island is much loved, and has even won a BAFTA for Best Reality and Constructed Factual (non-fiction). All 12 seasons are there to back-binge, or just “pretend” to watch season 13 and jump right in.
